After her early career in teaching English, History and Music, Rhonda began counselling training and was employed as a director in Marriage Guidance (now Relationship Services) in 1979, and later became a psychotherapist and certified Transactional Analyst.

In 2001, she completed her honours degree in Psychology. her research topic was an investigation into prediction and prevention of filicide (the killing of children by a parent) in the context of separation and custody disputes. She also investigated recent research on sustaining relationships and on the effectiveness of couple therapy.
